Richard Martin

Mental Health Campaigner

Richard is a father of three grown-up children. His early career was in law – he was an employment law partner in the city for many years and had many management roles.

In 2011, he experienced acute burnout and spent a month in a psychiatric ward and two years recovering before feeling able to return to the workplace.

His purpose and drive for work now are all mental health related. He is an accredited Mental Health First Aid instructor and now provides training to organisations around the world, helping people understand more about mental health and how to look after themselves, as well as how to have better conversations with others.

He also runs the charity Mindful Business Charter, which is a community of employer organisations looking to reduce unnecessary stress in the ways we work so that we can work more healthily and effectively. He also chairs the Lord Mayor of London’s ‘This is Me’ campaign which uses the power of storytelling to reduce stigma. As well as his instructor and charity work, Richard is also an experienced speaker and qualified coach.
